How it all began

In 1988, Dermot Kerins (Bernie’s uncle) who ran Fernhurst Nurseries on the outskirts of Kenmare town, was looking to expand his plant nursery to Tralee.

A keen gardener and plant enthusiast, Dermot specialised in introducing various heather varieties into Ireland. He opened Fernhurst Nurseries in 1989 and three years later sold the business to Bernie.

Renamed ‘Ballyseedy Garden Centre’ a new chapter had begun for the McDonnell family. After years of hard work and passion for the industry, a beautiful new shop was created in 2007 known to locals as the ‘Crystal Palace’.

Fast forward to 2020, and the next generation of the McDonnell family, Abigail, Nathan, Naomi, Ruth and Salome support with the running, development and vision of the business.

Ballyseedy offered their kitchen to Meals on Wheels when the Café closed its doors due to the pandemic earlier in 2020.

The Tralee branch of SVP were overwhelmed by the requests for food during the pandemic, so saw an opportunity to help out by we handing the full use of our facility to the amazing team at ‘Meals on Wheels’.

Almost 10,000 meals were produced onsite from mid-March with the help and support from so many wonderful people. Meals on Wheels is a local and national program that delivers meals to people at home who are unable to purchase or prepare their own food.
